Have you heard of Buriti Oil? No? Well you’re about to discover why it may be the best ingredient to add to your skincare routine right now.
Buriti oil, also called mauritia flexosa oil, is extracted from the nuts of the moriche palm tree. It is indigenous to the Amazon rainforest and other tropical regions in South America. It has been gaining popularity in the beauty industry for its numerous benefits to skin health and appearance.
Potent Antioxidants
Buriti oil is packed with antioxidants, including high levels of beta-carotene (vitamin A), which the skin converts into Retinol. In fact, it contains more beta-carotene than carrot oil.
Antioxidants play an important role in maintaining skin's healthy appearance and aid in protecting cells from intrusion by free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules, or atoms, that are missing an electron. These molecules are highly unstable, and look for other electron-balanced molecules, like the ones that make up skin cells. When they find one, they steal the electron from the healthy molecule, creating damage to the cell.
Pro-Aging
As we age, we begin to see fine lines, dark spots and loss of firmness. These are all signs of free radical damage. Regular use of Buriti oil will help protect your skin from this type of environmental damage.
Moisturizing
This nourishing oil is also rich in fatty acids which help to keep skin hydrated by locking in moisture. Buriti oil aids in maintaining skin’s natural moisture balance, preventing dryness and helping to repair and maintain a healthy skin barrier.
A Gentle & Effective Alternative to Retinol
And still there’s more. This beneficial oil contains essential nutrients like Vitamins A and C, both of which play an important role in maintaining healthy skin. This natural, gentle form of Vitamin A supports cell turnover, while Vitamin C helps alleviate the appearance of dark spots and brighten skin tone. These properties also make Buriti oil a great option for those with sensitive skin who have been unable to tolerate other forms of Vitamin A.
Sustainability
As an added bonus, it’s good for your conscience. Buriti fruit is sustainably farmed and is supportive of rain forest conservation. The palm and its fruit are regarded as the “tree of life” by the natives in Brazil because of its nutritional value and positive impact on the economy. The fruit is eaten fresh and has been used by the Amazonian natives for centuries to protect skin from the sun.
With all this goodness, you can see why we had to include Buriti Oil in the new Beauty Sleep Overnight Brightening Mask, which has become an instant favorite among aos staff. We’re betting you’ll feel the same.
How to Use Buriti Oil
You can incorporate buriti oil into your regular skincare rituals by finding products that are formulated with high quality, cold-pressed oil that's in its purest form. Be sure to ask the skincare company if they use an unrefined oil- expeller pressing heats oils to high temperatures, destroying the valuable vitamins and antioxidants. Oils are often chemically bleached to remove color and/or aroma. This process also breaks down the very components we're looking for in the oil. At aos, we never buy oils that have been overheated or chemically processed. Our buriti oil is cold-pressed and is a gorgeously dark amber color with a slightly nutty aroma.
