SUNNY DAYS ARE COMING

Spring is just around the corner and it's time to prep your skin for the sunny days ahead. Whether you’re planning to hit the beach, explore new places, or enjoy the outdoors near home, following are some tips to help keep your skin healthy and protected.

Hydration

Before you even take a step into the sun, make sure your skin is well-hydrated from within. As temperatures rise, your chance of becoming dehydrated rises. Drinking plenty of water on a regular basis is essential to keeping your skin healthy and resilient.

Try a gel cleanser

After a day of fun in the sun, be sure to cleanse your skin thoroughly to remove sunscreen, sweat and dirt. Use a gentle cleanser suited to your skin type to avoid stripping away your skin's protective barrier. If you are using a cream cleanser for winter, consider switching to a gel cleanser for spring and summer. Gel cleansers can do a better job of removing the increased oil your skin may start producing in the warmer weather. The Apple Chamomile Cleansing Gel is soap-free and will thoroughly cleanse without compromising your skin’s hydrolipid barrier.

Consider switching up your moisturizer

If you like to use a heavier moisturizer during the colder months, consider switching to a lighter product during the warmer weather. Your skin will likely become oilier during spring and summer, but it still needs moisture. Hydrating serums and lotion-based moisturizers will provide your skin with the hydration it needs without feeling heavy. Some customer favorites during the warmer months are the Goji Mate Ultralight Moisturizer, Yarrow Oil-Free Moisturizing Gel and the Apple Stem Cell Daily Radiance Cream

Keep up with exfoliation

If you're currently using an exfoliant regularly, keep it up. If you’re not currently exfoliating, consider adding a gentle scrub or AHA/BHA product to your routine 2-3 times per week. Regular exfoliation helps clear clogged pores and prevent the buildup of dead skin cells. This will ensure you have a radiant, glowing complexion any time of year.

Sunscreen (Surprise! It always matters.)

The most important step in your spring break skincare routine is applying sunscreen. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and reapply every two hours, especially if you’re swimming or sweating. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to all exposed areas of your body. The Broad Spectrum Sunshade Lotion SPF 30 is made with skin-nourishing ingredients, is sweat- and water-resistant and is reef-safe for all your adventures.

Don’t forget about your lips

Your lips also need protection from the sun’s harmful rays, too. Use a lip balm with SPF to keep your lips moisturized and protected. Reapply throughout the day, especially after eating, drinking or being in the water.

When possible, stay in the shade

While it’s tempting to want to soak up the sun after a long winter, spending too much time in direct sunlight can and will damage your skin. Whenever possible, seek shade, especially during the hottest parts of the day (usually between 10am and 4pm). Wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and SPF-protective clothing will also provide additional protection for your eyes and skin.

After Sun Care

Even with the best precautions, your skin may still need some extra TLC after a day in the sun. If you do get sunburned, soothe your skin with aloe vera or a gentle moisturizer containing soothing ingredients such as cucumber and chamomile. The Cucumber Aloe Rescue Gel was created to help soothe sunburned and irritated skin. You do not want to try to scrub off inflamed skin. Avoid harsh ingredients and scrubs that can further irritate your skin. Be gentle and patient with skin that is healing.

Consistency

Skincare is all about consistency, so don’t let your routine slip just because you’re on vacation. Stick to your regular skincare routine as much as possible, even while you’re away from home. Your skin will thank you for it.

By following a few simple tips, you can enjoy spring break fun without compromising the health of your skin. You’ll keep your skin healthy and radiant year-round.
