    Skin type 8 sounds ominous, doesn't it? Don't worry- it's actually the most common when we are lucky enough to grow older. As our bodies change, we may suddenly wake up and wonder just what happened. The skin looks visibly older- wrinkles and fine lines are showing. Maybe some dark spots are showing up here and there, perhaps some broken capillaries as well. Things are sagging a bit and the skin looks dull and depleted. Even the richest moisturizers may seem like they're just sitting on top of the skin.

    Is this you? If so, you have "Skin Type 8" and are in need of a boost in cellular turnover - regular exfoliation with AHAs like lactic acid and a manual scrub remove dull, dead skin to reveal younger, brighter skin cells underneath and increase absorption of nutrients.     Recommended Skincare Ritual for Skin Type #8

    STEP 1: Cleanse

    When cleansing, it's important to get your skin clean without stripping your natural oils or damaging your moisture barrier. Cream based cleansers work best for Skin Type #8. Avoid soap based and high-foaming cleansers that can strip your skin, leaving it vulnerable and subject to irritation.

    STEP 2: Exfoliate & Mask

    Removing dead skin cells once or twice a week allows your leave-on products to work better. When you remove dead skin, a chemical signal is sent down into the dermis to stimulate new cell formation - your skin literally gets younger! The trick is exfoliating without causing irritation. Gentle scrubs with round particles (like spherical jojoba wax beads) can polish off dead skin cells without catching and damaging live skin. Avoid scrubs made with angular particles like sugar, salt, walnut and apricot. Chemical exfoliants may be suitable- do a patch test first and stick with the more gentle acids like lactic (sugar based) and mandelic (from apples). Fruit based AHAs and glycolic acids may be too strong for Skin Type #8. 
    Replenishing and calming facial masks are recommended once a week or as-needed. Look for masks with calming botanicals like raw honey that will gently feed your skin.

    We Recommend:
    Cucumber Face Polish     (2-3 times a week)
    Coconut Lactic Peel (1-2 times a week. Do a patch test first)
    Honey Avocado Rescue Mask (as needed for deep hydration)

    STEP 3: Tone & Restore pH

    Toners (and hydrosols) remove any little bits of dirt and makeup after you cleanse and restore your skin's slightly acidic pH after you cleanse (cleansers are slightly basic). You can also use a toner for a quick no-rinse cleanse. Avoid toners with alcohol and synthetic fragrances. Look for one that's specifically calming - hydrosols are the steam-distillate of plants and make excellent toners for dry, delicate and depleted skin. Even better, they're multipurpose because they naturally contain many skin-nourishing elements: you can mist a hydrosol over your skin anytime, leaving it on to hydrate, soothe, brighten and feed your skin. Being mineral-rich, they also work well as makeup setting sprays.

    STEP 4: Treat

    Dry, sensitive skin craves hydration and soothing ingredients. Serums and facial oils are packed with powerful ingredients in a base that can effectively deliver those ingredients into the skin. Look for products with hydrating ingredients like vegan hyaluronic acid, Poria cocos to calm and plump skin, peptides to firm things up, antioxidants and vitamin C to protect and brighten sun damaged skin.

    STEP 5: Moisturize

    We're big fans of moisturizing every morning and evening. A good facial moisturizer will not only hydrate your skin- it will deliver nutrients, calm redness and protect you from damaging UV rays during the day. Look for moisturizers with mineral sunscreen for the morning and plumping and brightening ingredients.
